How fresh flowers helped me during COVID-19
Updated: Jul 5
Okay, Okay so 2020 has not been great so far. I’m going to say it C-O-V-I-D-1-9 has affected our lives in some way. The dreaded super bug, the daily political updates, the conspiracy theories and was there even infected bat soup? Who knows?
All I know it has been a time to come together, talk to neighbours you haven’t had time to give the time of day to and scratch your head while you try and work out how to download Zoom. It has given me personally an opportunity to reflect on how I live my life and how I choose to spend my time. Home-schooling, wow, well that has been a real eye opener and since when do 7 years olds do algebra!
Its all been a bit stressful, my Husband has been working from home and I have been juggling motherhood and floristry with two small children, one of which is a complete chatterbox. To combat this change in lifestyle I have been filling my home with flowers. They are everywhere! They just make me happy and me feel like I'm outdoors when we have been stuck indoors. My very own English country garden on the inside my home.
Flowers and nature play such a big part in how we create the happiness chemicals in our brains - having a vase of fresh flowers bursting with colour in our homes or work place can make a grey day into a colourful day. They are natural stress relievers and smile makers.
At one point over the lockdown period I could only wave at my parents through the window, I found this difficult because I was so used to popping over for a cuppa or two. I came to think about how I could give a gift from a distance and how I could help spread some positivity and cheer during lockdown - a doorstep bouquet! A gesture to let them know I was thinking about them and missing them. In my eyes a big bunch of fresh flowers is just as good as a hug, well for now...
